Nowadays, there are so many alternatives to cows milk. You can find soy, almond, hemp, coconut, quinoa and rice milks and many more.
I am not Vegan. But I try to avoid any kind of dairy. If you also have decided to ditch the dairy in your diet, your body will thank you. Increasing number of people are reported lactose intolerant, and the consumption of dairy products has been linked to everything from increased risk of ovarian and prostate cancers to ear infections and diabetes.
I normally make my own almond milk. But I felt like a change and made some cashew milk.
Making your own plant baed milk is incredibly easy and a lot less expensive than store bought ones. Also the Vanilla Cashew milk is nicely creamy and rich in minerals without having to add any substitutes like carrageenan or thickeners.
ALL YOU NEED:
- one cup of nuts, soaked overnight - I used cashew but feel free to use almond or any other kind as well
- a pinch of salt
- vanilla bean, scraped
- 3 cups of filtered water
THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT:
- Soak cashews overnight and discard the water
- Blend soaked nuts, filtered water, vanilla and salt together until smooth
- Pour the milk through a fine mesh strainer or a tea filter
